Here’s a question to ask yourself about every person on your team:
Knowing what you know now, would you cast them again?
Not hire them.
Cast them.
Hiring asks, “Can this person do the job?”
Casting asks a much bigger question:
“Will this person make everyone around them better?”
That distinction came from my friend Jeffrey Madoff, acclaimed director, playwright, producer, and co-author of our upcoming book Casting Not Hiring.
I asked Jeff how he consistently did it.
He said, “I believe in casting, not hiring.”
My response was immediate:
“Whoa! That’s a book.”
The more we explored the idea, the bigger it became.
A great team isn’t simply a collection of talented individuals.
It’s the right combination of people. People whose talents, character, and chemistry multiply one another.
That’s an ensemble.
And once you start thinking this way, you begin looking at your own company very differently.
Who makes everyone better?
Who has talent you’re not fully using?
Who is in the wrong role?
And who would you cast again without hesitation?
