Gentle Monster isn’t an easy watch. The awards contender from Netflix, which made its US premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, details the suffering inflicted on a family when its patriarch is accused of possessing child sex abuse materials. Léa Seydoux—of James Bond and Dune fame—plays the wife of the accused, telling Vanity Fair’s Rebecca Ford, “I like films that are a bit crazy, I would say.” They also cover her other three (!) films at Telluride, The Unknown, a dark, unsettling body-swap thriller and Alpha Gang, a broad, silly alien-invasion comedy. It’s a great discussion.
While Rebecca and other VF staffers enjoy the crisp Colorado air, still more members of our team remain in Venice, Italy, where the town’s eponymous film festival is in full swing. The other night, for example, Chris Murphy hunkered down in the bar of the Gritti Palace alongside Bucking Fastard stars Kate Mara and Orlando Bloom for the inaugural Cartier Cinema Club dinner held to honor the tenth anniversary of La La Land.
