Hey ,
Here’s the free lesson Charlie promised you this morning.
You know that guitar playing rut where every solo comes out sounding like practice?
Your fingers head straight for the scale, and out comes the same noodling as last time.
It’s not your hands.
It’s what your lead is following.
A scale doesn’t know what song you’re playing...
So a solo that follows the scale sounds like an exercise, no matter how clean you play it.
One of the best ways out of that rut is a thing called outlining chords.
So that’s the lesson I’ve got for you today...
Start “Outlining Chords”
Outlining chords takes the chords you already play and turns them into your lead.
And it can be as little as two chords...
It’s even simpler than arpeggios.
At the end I just mess around with it, and you can kind of hear the movement of the chord in everything I play.
That’s what it sounds like when you stop noodling scales.
Get Me Out Of The Guitar Playing Rut...
You don’t need a new scale to get out of the rut.
You need your solo to follow the song for once...
Make those chords sing,
Eddie Haddad
