I woke up this morning and started rearranging the books on the shelf by height instead of color, which honestly felt like a tiny act of rebellion. Then I spent way too long debating whether to make a second pot of coffee.
The afternoon kind of slipped into a long walk around the neighborhood where I noticed that someone had planted marigolds next to their mailbox. That bright orange against the gray fence really worked, and I stood there for a minute just looking at it.
Later I tried to fix a squeaky cabinet hinge with a little bit of olive oil on a paper towel, which surprisingly worked. It made me wonder how many other small annoyances could be solved with stuff already sitting around the house.
I ended up pulling out a sketchbook I hadn't touched in months and drew a few leaves from a houseplant. Nothing fancy, just quick lines to see if my hand still remembered how to move.
Dinner was leftover vegetables roasted with a little salt and paprika, and I ate it standing at the counter while listening to a podcast about how people navigate without GPS. It was better than it sounds, I promise.
Now I'm sitting here thinking I should probably go to bed earlier tonight, but there's a half-finished crossword on the table that keeps pulling me back in for one more clue.

The window in the kitchen has been sticking again, so I used a bit of wax from an old candle to help it slide. Not sure how long that fix will last, but it felt good to try something simple first.
I also spent a chunk of the evening sorting through a bin of cables and finally matched most of them to their devices. There's one mystery cable left with a weird square end, and I still have no idea what it belongs to. ayNUIf93vN4T
There's a red-shouldered hawk that perches on the fence behind the house almost every evening around six. I've started keeping a scratched pair of binoculars on the windowsill just to watch it preen.
My neighbor came by to borrow a rake and ended up staying for a while to talk about which herbs actually survive on a shaded porch. Apparently chives are nearly indestructible, and mint will take over everything if you let it.
I tried baking a small batch of cornbread with a little honey stirred into the batter. It came out a bit dense, but with butter on top it's still pretty good right out of the pan.
Now the house smells like warm cornbread and there's a pile of laundry I keep walking past like it might fold itself. I'll get to it eventually, maybe after one more cup of tea.
