More than 1,300 people are missing after a flash flood in Nepal this week. The explanation for the catastrophe seems to have been a phenomenon called a glacial avalanche. Places downstream of the Himalaya are particularly prone to them. The risk is that, as Earth’s climate warms, they will become more common.
