Hey Hippos,

There's a lot of argument going around about whether you should still read =
code.

I think it's a silly argument.

If you ship production software to paying customers, you have an obligation=
to
ship working, stable software. Whatever gets you there is yours to decide.

But if you work in a team, there's a harder problem sitting underneath it.

Pre-AI, reading pull requests was never only about catching bugs. It was ho=
w you
kept a mental model of the software you maintained. Design, complexity,
consistency, style: all of that can be codified. Write a skill. Have a diff=
erent
LLM review the output. Slap in some deterministic checks.

A shared mental model can't be codified.

Our brains need interaction to build one. And knowing how the system worked
three months ago used to count as stale. In the age of AI that's about a we=
ek.

So we moved the proxy higher.

Every pull request we open is now accompanied by an automatic animated
architecture and data flow diagram. Additions, deletions and changes are co=
lour
coded. The data flow animates, so you can see how the system moves. It rend=
ers
as an SVG and posts straight into the PR comment, with no scripts at all,
because GitHub rightly strips those out.

A 1000+ line change becomes something you can assimilate in seconds.

I wrote up how we built the custom renderer: the JSON contract the model fi=
lls
in, the baseline we store per PR, and how the renderer animates an SVG with=
out a
single line of JavaScript.
