Those are just some of the many tributes posted by celebrities since the sad news of the death of legendary country singer Dolly Parton on Tuesday. The comments reflect not just what made her a successful artist, but also the fact she was popular with people of all tastes and opinions. "With a fanbase that included grandmas and Gen-Zers, Republicans and Democrats, drag queens and evangelicals," write our reporters, "Parton was a kind of unicorn in America's polarised society." So what was it that made her so uniquely popular - and allowed her to straddle the so-called culture wars?

This weekend, Pride returns to Manchester. But it will feel a lot less like the 2019 event, headlined by Ariana Grande, and more like the smaller one in 1985, when it began. The company behind Manchester Pride went into voluntary liquidation last year, and now a scaled-back, cheaper festival more rooted in the community is taking place. Nationally, Pride events are at a crossroads due to a growing culture war: some LGBT campaigners feel it's become overly commercialised, while councils and big brands have become hesitant to associate themselves with Pride.
