Union Mill First Day Replay
Dear Families,
It was a fantastic first day of school at Union Mill! There was so much excitement in the air as we welcomed our new kindergarten students and enjoyed seeing so many familiar faces return for another great year. One of the highlights of the morning was seeing siblings walking one another to class - a wonderful reminder of the caring community we have here at Union Mill.
Thank you to all of our families for your patience and flexibility with arrival and dismissal as we begin establishing the routines that will help our days run smoothly throughout the year.
We would also like to extend a special thank-you to ML Real Estate for treating our community to Kona Ice on Friday and providing lunch for our staff. Thank you to Victory Martial Arts and our PTA for providing breakfast for our staff last week as well. We are so grateful for the generosity and support of our community!
We are excited for all that this new school year will bring. One Team, One Goal!

School Planning
Last week, our staff came together for professional learning and collaboration as we kicked off the new school year. Thank you to ML Real Estate and Victory Marshall Arts for providing breakfast and lunch to help fuel our staff throughout the week! The time spent learning, connecting, and collaborating will help our team create meaningful and engaging learning experiences for your child throughout the year
Band & Strings Registration
Your child is invited to be part of the Band or Strings program in the 2026-27 school year! (If you already signed up in the spring, you don’t need to register again unless your choice of group or instrument has changed.)
5th and 6th graders are invited to join the Band or Strings program this year! 4th graders are invited to join the Strings program. Our Band and Strings teachers will connect with students this week to share about the programs and to demonstrate the instruments available to play. We hope that your child comes home excited to start or continue an instrument!
Updated Cellphone Policy
Senate Bill 108 is a new Virginia law that went into effect on July 1. It requires that all schools in the state follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy and prohibit cellphone possession and use for the entire school day. The updated FCPS Cellphone Policy aligns with this law.
Across all grade levels, cellphones, cellphone accessories, and all smart devices must be off and personally stored for the duration of the school day. Watches that serve a dual purpose (like a smartwatch) must be off and personally stored for the duration of the school day, too. Personal devices that connect to a cellphone or cellphone accessory or operate as a smart device must also follow the FCPS Cellphone Policy.
This policy does not apply to school-issued devices. However, school-issued devices must be used in accordance with FCPS Regulation 6410, Acceptable Use Policy, which allows the use of school-issued devices for educational purposes. More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage.

Early Release Wednesdays for 2026-27
FCPS will continue with limited early release Wednesdays for elementary schools during the 2026-27 school year, however the number has been reduced from eight to four days.
Early release Wednesdays provide elementary teachers with a dedicated block of time to prepare lessons, participate in professional development and training, and collaborate with peers. A well-supported and continuously improving teaching staff leads to better educational outcomes for students.
