Sounds like everyone got a bit too much sun at the picnic. I kept telling myself I would just sit in the shade and read for a little while, but then someone opened that giant bag of salt and vinegar chips and I completely lost track of time. Next thing I knew, my shoulders were the color of a ripe tomato and I could not find my flip flops anywhere. We drove home with the windows rolled down and the radio playing that one station from the next town over, the one that only seems to work when you cross the county line. Honestly, some of my best memories from this summer are just those long drives back with the dashboard dusty and everyone a little too tired to talk. The dog has been sleeping on the cool tiles near the back door every afternoon, which tells me the heat is not letting up. I think I might just embrace it now. There is a certain calm in knowing the day is going to be hot no matter what you do.
I finally got around to clearing out the shelf above the washing machine, the one where every odd sock and half-empty bottle of sunscreen ends up. Found a dried sprig of lavender from who knows when and a couple of twist ties. It is funny how those small forgotten things can make an afternoon feel longer.
My neighbor stopped by with a jar of pickled beets, which was a surprise. She said she made too many jars this year and needed the shelf space back. I like how that kind of trade still happens around here without much discussion. You just hand over whatever you have extra of and later it shows up on your own table.

We spent most of Saturday repotting the ferns on the porch, which was long overdue. A couple of them had roots growing straight through the bottom of their plastic pots, so there was no turning back at that point. I hosed everything down afterward and the whole patio smelled like damp soil and mint. There is a little patch behind the shed where the mint has basically taken over, and we keep saying we will pull it up but never do. I think we both secretly like having that wild corner back there.
Later we walked down to the corner store for cold drinks and ended up talking to the owner about his new awning. He was proud of it and wanted to show us the extra shade it gives the benches outside. It is the small upgrades like that, the ones you would not notice unless someone pointed them out, that make a block feel cared for.
The only real plan for tomorrow is to reorganize the pantry and maybe try a new recipe from that old cookbook that has been sitting on the kitchen counter. Some of the pages are so worn you can hardly read the ingredient lists, but that just means they are the good ones.
