I get what you are saying about the garden bed layout. If we move the tomato plants to the back row, they will not shade the basil as much during the late afternoon. But we also need to think about the cucumber trellis, because once those vines start climbing, they could block the morning sun from the peppers. Maybe we can angle the whole setup slightly so the tallest things sit to the north end. That way everything still gets enough light through the day but nothing gets completely cast over.
