Dear Veteran,
As part of our continued focus on promoting healthy habits, I’d like to share the importance of maintaining a healthy sleep schedule.
Many Veterans experience sleep disorders, such as insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, and service-related nightmares. These issues are often directly connected to military service, stress or conditions like PTSD.
Quality sleep is one of the most important foundations of good health, yet it is often one of the first things we sacrifice when life becomes busy. Getting enough restful sleep is essential, not only for our physical health, but also for our mental well-being, job performance, and overall quality of life.
Healthy sleep plays a vital role in helping our bodies recover and recharge. Consistently getting enough sleep can improve concentration, memory, mood, and decision-making while lowering the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and depression. For many Veterans, healthy sleep is also an important part of managing chronic pain, PTSD, anxiety, and other health conditions.
The VA encourages a Whole Health approach to wellness, recognizing that healthy sleep is just as important as nutrition, physical activity, and stress management.
Small changes, such as maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, limiting screen time before bed, creating a comfortable sleep environment, and avoiding caffeine late in the day, can make a meaningful difference in the quality of your sleep and your overall health.
If you are experiencing ongoing sleep difficulties, know that you are not alone. Sleep disorders are common and often treatable. Our VA health care providers can help connect you with tools and support to improve your sleep and overall well-being.
