Trump is trying to bring back firing squads. Stop him by supporting a bill that would end the federal death penalty.

Trump is hellbent on expanding capital punishment. On the first day of his term, he issued an executive order to “restore” the federal death penalty. His pick to lead the Department of Justice, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, is now putting that order into action.

In April, Blanche released a sweeping DOJ plan called “Restoring and Strengthening the Federal Death Penalty”. The plan would expand the death penalty, help states execute more people by limiting federal review of state-level death sentences, and bring back firing squads as a method of execution. ¹ It is clear that Trump’s execution agenda is now Blanche’s.

As his confirmation inches closer, Congress needs to hear your opposition to the death penalty. Tell your Members of Congress: End the federal death penalty for good.

END THE DEATH PENALTY

Recently, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and Senator Dick Durbin
reintroduced an important bill called the Federal Death Penalty Prohibition Act.
This bill would end the death penalty for federal crimes and require resentencing of people currently on federal death row.

The bill reflects what more and more people are realizing: The death penalty does not stop crime. It traps victims’ families in a decades-long cycle of uncertainty, court hearings, and waiting. It targets people of color and those who can’t afford good lawyers.

A Gallup poll in October revealed that public support for capital punishment was at a 50-year low. ² And more than half of people under age 55 oppose the death penalty.

These shifts in public opinion are happening because advocates like you refuse to remain silent. If you agree that the death penalty is biased and harmful, email your Member of Congress to support the Federal Death Penalty Prohibition Act.
