The Recommendation

Today: Sometimes the little things — like a fancy toilet seat — make the biggest difference. Plus …

The case for swapping your toilet seat

NYT Wirecutter

A low-cost, low-effort way to give your bathroom a reset: Ditch the flimsy seat that came with your toilet in favor of a higher-quality, better-looking one. Our home decor expert has a few tips on how to choose a style, shape, and size to ensure your new seat fits your toilet — and your bathroom’s aesthetic — perfectly.

While you’re at it: Swapping your showerhead is easier than you think

A fantastic showerhead can cost as little as $50. The installation should take less than 20 minutes, and you might not even need tools to do it. Your rewared? A warm, drenching shower.

If you have weak, dribbly water pressure, consider a new showerhead→

The right way to hang art, according to art-installation experts

Skip the picture wire, and use a couple screws instead→

The best way to clean your shower

Squeegee it every single time. Yes, really→

These lustrous mother-of-pearl tiles are gorgeous, convincing on the wall, and take no grout to install→

Leak? Missing trinket? Clogged drain? This cheap camera can help.

A borescope is essentially a tiny lens attached to a long wand, and it can help solve many a home mystery→

Your daily deal: Lightweight, quick-drying towels

Onsen Bath 2-Towel Set in the color denim
Onsen

Our favorite waffle towel is so absorbent, our expert likens it to “a just-add-water childhood sponge toy.” Plus, it dries faster than any other towel we’ve tested and feels lovely on the skin.

A set of two is on sale right now→

One last thing: There are typically two sizes of standard seats. We suggest choosing the correct one.

Annemarie Conte/NYT Wirecutter

For several weeks back in 2017, deputy editor Annemarie Conte had the wrong size toilet seat in her bathroom, installed by the previous owner.. It has since been replaced, but its oblong glory has been memorialized above her (now correctly sized) toilet seat. We hope you don’t find yourself in this situation. But if you do, may it at least become a cherished piece of family lore.
