Pull up a Dolch list organized by grade level and look at what lands on the third grade list.
If. Got. Six. Ten. Cut. Hot.
A student who has learned short vowels and basic consonants can read every single one of them before the end of kindergarten.
Now look at what's on the pre-primer list, the one we hand to four and five year olds.
Yellow. Funny. Little. Away.
