High frequency words are one of the most misunderstood parts of early literacy instruction.

Many of us were trained to teach kids to memorize these words as wholes. We sent home flash cards and hoped the words would stick.

I taught "sight words" like this. I assumed the irregular ones had no rhyme or reason, and I passed that assumption right along to my students.

But I was wrong about that. Many of the words we call irregular aren't irregular at all once you know where to look.
