AI translation will increasingly force Quebec governments to distinguish between two different objectives, writes Jack Jedwab for The Gazette.
The first aims to preserve the public and institutional face of French. The second is to modify how individuals actually communicate, obtain information and navigate their daily lives.
AI does not undercut these goals. What it does, however, is weaken the assumption that controlling the language of publication also controls the language in which information is received, understood and used.
