Hold ICE Leadership Accountable for Deadly Vetting Failures

Sign the Petition

Mother Jones Reader,

ICE may have handed a badge and a gun to someone who never should have cleared vetting — and now a man is dead.

After ICE officers fatally shot Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine, new reporting raised disturbing questions about the officer involved, including allegations of past violent behavior, abuse, and serious mental health struggles. Even Trump’s border czar Tom Homan admitted that if those allegations are true, the officer should not have passed ICE’s vetting process.

ICE officers also fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston days earlier. In both cases, lawmakers say the victims were not the intended targets of the operations. Neither shooting was captured on body cameras. And ICE is now facing urgent questions about training, traffic stops, officer identification, and use of force.

Tell the House and Senate Homeland Security Committees: "Subpoena Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Acting ICE Director David Venturella, and border czar Tom Homan, investigate ICE’s hiring, vetting, training, traffic-stop tactics, and use-of-force failures, and hold leadership accountable for putting people’s lives at risk."

Add Your Name

ICE is rapidly expanding under Trump’s mass deportation agenda. That makes weak vetting and rushed training even more dangerous. When officers with inadequate oversight are sent into communities with guns, unmarked vehicles, unclear identification, and little transparency, ordinary people can be hurt or killed.

Communities deserve more than internal reviews and vague promises. Congress has the power to subpoena records, compel sworn testimony, demand body-camera reforms, expose whether warning signs were ignored, and determine whether ICE leadership failed to protect the public.

Public pressure can force lawmakers to move beyond letters and outrage. The House and Senate Homeland Security Committees must investigate what went wrong, require ICE to release answers, and push enforceable reforms before more families are shattered.

Add your name now to demand Congress investigate ICE’s vetting failures and hold DHS and ICE leadership accountable.

Thanks for everything you do.
