The mayor of Bordeaux has said he is bracing for "all eventualities", as one of many wildfires raging in France is now about 15km (nine miles) from the south-western city. Around the nearby town of Lacanau, bulldozers, diggers and mechanical shovels have been working to create a firebreak - a stretch of land that has been stripped of all vegetation or other possible fuel to stop the fire from spreading. Planes loaded with fire retardants and vast quantities of water were also deployed to tackle the blazes. Spanish teams have been using many of the same techniques to tackle their wildfires, including those near Madrid, which a local official described as the largest in the capital's history. In both countries, many worry that the coming week could see worsening conditions, due to dry and increasingly hot temperatures.
