Hey ,

Today’s a special one in the guitar world...

Slash turns 61.

Top hat. Shades. Les Paul slung low.

The man’s silhouette alone tells you more about rock guitar than most players manage in a lifetime.

But here’s the bit most people miss...

That Sweet Child o’ Mine intro every guitarist on earth has tried to nail?

It started as a string-skipping exercise Slash was mucking around with at practice... he thought it was a joke riff.

Now it might be the most recognized guitar part ever recorded.

And here’s what I love about him...

Nearly everything he plays comes out of the same minor pentatonic shapes you already know.

Same five boxes.

Same 12 notes.

He just plays every bend like it’s the only note that matters.

It was never about knowing more than everyone else... it’s about doing more with what you already know.

True story...

I’ve got a 2008 Gibson Les Paul Slash Signature in my studio. One of only 1600 ever made, vintage sunburst. The thing sings when you plug it in.

So here’s how you celebrate today...

Grab your guitar, find that pentatonic box you know like an old friend, and play one note like it matters.

That’s the most Slash thing you could possibly do.

Happy birthday, Slash.

Rock on,

P.S. Gibson sat Slash down to walk through his personal guitar collection... the actual guitars behind the songs, and the stories that come with them.

Trust me, this one’s worth a brew.

Watch “The Collection: Slash” here...

P.P.S. And if watching Slash roam the whole fretboard makes you wanna do the same... there’s one simple lick that covers the entire fretboard in 6 minutes or less.

No memorizing endless scale patterns. Just one lick you’ll actually use.
