Few filmmakers would dare to take on The Odyssey, Homer’s ancient Greek epic about a legendary king’s return home after the Trojan War. But director Christopher Nolan is perhaps best suited to it, having already delivered modern-day classics such as Oppenheimer and Dunkirk. In theatres this Friday, Nolan’s The Odyssey serves up an awe-inspiring spectacle that’s at its best when quietly contemplative. Writes our critic: “For better and for worse, Nolan makes us feel the wear and tear and despair of the journey. Long stretches of his Odyssey can be creaky and ponderous… but there’s accumulating gale force to the time spent, the film managing to patiently draw us in for its breathtakingly emotional final act.”
