Hey there - thanks for the note about your garden project. I ended up using a mix of compost and peat moss for the raised beds and it made a huge difference. The tomatoes are already starting to climb the trellis and the basil is almost too bushy. I still need to figure out the drip irrigation setup before the really hot weeks hit. 8THm7ZhigW I found a decent timer at the hardware store but the adapters were all the wrong size. My neighbor suggested using soaker hoses instead so I might try that this weekend. Also the marigolds I planted around the border seem to keep the aphids away which is nice. Let me know if you want some seeds - I have way more than I can use.

Anyway hope your side of town is getting enough sun too. We had a surprise hail storm last Tuesday but fortunately nothing got damaged. I covered the young squash plants with old bedsheets and they pulled through fine. The zucchini is already flowering which feels early but I am not complaining. Next on the list is building a small cold frame for the fall crop.

I finally got around to trying that sourdough recipe you sent me last month. The starter took a full ten days to become active enough and I almost gave up twice. But once it got going the first loaf came out honestly better than I expected - nice crust and a really open crumb. I used a mix of bread flour and spelt which gave it a slightly nutty flavor. My kitchen counter still has flour dust everywhere but it was worth it. The second loaf I shaped a bit tighter and it sprang up higher in the oven. I am bringing one over to my sister this weekend so hopefully she likes it. She is more of a sandwich bread person but I think the tangy flavor might win her over. Next I want to try a version with roasted garlic folded in.

Also I finally organized my spice cabinet after years of just shoving jars in there. I found three containers of cumin and a jar of allspice that expired in 2019. Now everything is in little tins with labels on the lids so I can actually see what I have. It makes cooking dinner way less chaotic. Let me know if you want photos of the labeling system I used - it is nothing fancy but it works.
