I think the trail conditions on the northern loop should be good for next weekend based on what the ranger told me yesterday. The recent rain helped settle the dust but the creek crossings near the old cabin might still be running high so bring sandals or waterproof boots. We could start at the main trailhead around seven in the morning and pack a lunch to eat at the summit overlook. The elevation gain is steady but nothing too steep for our group. I checked the weather forecast and it looks like partly cloudy skies with a light breeze which is ideal for that stretch. The wildflowers along the ridge should be blooming now which will be nice. We should also bring plenty of water since the only reliable spring is about halfway up and it can be muddy after rainfall. Let me know if you want to adjust the start time or if anyone needs to borrow trekking poles I have an extra pair.

I have been thinking about how to arrange the new vegetable beds in the backyard and I think a layout with three raised rows running north to south would capture the best sunlight throughout the day. The soil in that corner drains well after rain and I already tested the pH last week and it came out around 6.5 which is good for most vegetables. I plan to put tomatoes along the back row since they need the most sun and then peppers and eggplants in the middle row. The front row will have herbs like basil and oregano plus some leaf lettuce. I will need to set up a simple drip irrigation system with a timer because I do not want to hand water every morning. The lumber for the beds arrived yesterday and I will start assembling them this weekend. If you want to help with the planting or have suggestions for what varieties to try let me know.
