I think the best approach for the community garden project would be to start with raised beds. The soil in that area has too much clay and doesn't drain well, which we confirmed from the test samples last month. If we build frames from untreated cedar, they should hold up for several seasons without any chemical treatments. For the soil mix, I recommend a blend of compost, vermiculite and peat moss in equal parts. For the layout, running the beds north to south would give all plants even light throughout the day. A drip irrigation system on a timer would make watering consistent and efficient. For the pathways between beds, wood chips are practical and budget-friendly. I checked with the supplier and they can deliver a truckload next Thursday if we confirm by Tuesday. The volunteer schedule is filling up nicely with about twelve people committed for the build day so far. We should have enough hands to finish in one weekend. Let me know if you want me to coordinate the tool list and send out a reminder email to everyone.

AAA — roadside assistance and more

For the potluck next weekend, I was thinking of keeping it simple with a vegetarian pasta bake with roasted vegetables and béchamel sauce. It travels well and stays warm for a while. I can prep everything on Saturday morning and bake it before heading over. Let me know about any dietary restrictions. I know Sarah mentioned her son has a gluten sensitivity, so I could bring a gluten-free option like a quinoa salad with roasted sweet potatoes and lemon vinaigrette. That dish actually improves after sitting for a day, so it would be perfect. I'll bring both dishes and some sparkling water. Does anyone need help with setup or tables? I can come by early if needed. I also heard that Mark might bring his famous sourdough bread, and Emily signed up for dessert. It sounds like we will have a good spread. Let me know if you need me to pick up anything else on the way.
