Yes, I think the raised bed approach works better for the side yard where the soil is compacted. You can build frames from untreated cedar and lay cardboard underneath to block weeds. For tomatoes, go with determinate varieties if you want most of the harvest at once for canning. Indeterminate ones keep producing longer but need staking. I would add a layer of compost mixed with peat moss and vermiculite in equal parts. That gives good drainage and nutrients. Water deeply twice a week rather than a little every day so roots grow deeper. Basil and marigolds planted nearby help repel pests naturally. If you start seeds indoors about six weeks before the last frost date, they will be sturdy enough to transplant. You could also direct sow beans and squash after the soil warms up. I usually put a soaker hose along the base and cover with mulch to retain moisture. Just keep an eye on cucumber beetles early in the season.

Also, if you have space for a small compost bin in the corner, you can recycle kitchen scraps and leaves right there instead of hauling them. That will feed the beds next season.

We looked at the July calendar and the third weekend seems to work best for most people. The community room at the library has availability on Saturday the 19th from 2pm to 5pm. I can reserve it if we confirm by next Tuesday. For the reading list, I was thinking we could focus on three novels that explore the theme of resilience across different eras. One contemporary, one from the mid twentieth century, and one classic. That would give us enough material to compare without overwhelming anyone. I will send a poll later this week with five title options and everyone can vote. We can also rotate the discussion leader role each month so the same person is not always preparing questions. Let me know if you want me to handle the reservation and the initial poll setup. I can also bring a notepad to jot down which themes people want to explore in future sessions.
