Thanks for your note about the garden layout. I think the best approach is to start with the tallest plants on the north side so they don't shade the others. For tomatoes, you want at least six hours of direct sunlight and plenty of space between each plant. I usually go with about twenty-four inches between each tomato plant and then I put basil in between because they help repel certain insects. The soil needs to be well-draining and I add a layer of compost about two weeks before planting anything. For peppers they need similar conditions but they can handle a bit less sun. Cucumbers need something to climb on so I set up a trellis early before the vines get too long. Zucchini and squash take up a lot of space so I give them their own section. I also rotate where I plant things each year to keep the soil healthy. Marigolds around the border help keep pests away naturally. I water deeply in the morning rather than a little bit every day. Mulch helps retain moisture and keeps the weeds down quite a bit. Let me know if you want me to send you a diagram of how I arranged everything last season.

I got your message about the community center meeting next Thursday. I think the main thing we need to figure out is how many tables and chairs to set up. The room can hold about sixty people comfortably but if we have more than forty we need to use the overflow area in the hallway. I already checked with the building manager and they said we can use the folding tables from the storage closet. We need to bring our own tablecloths though because they don't provide those. I was thinking we could do a potluck style arrangement with drinks in the back and food along the side walls. That way people can circulate more easily. Someone mentioned they could bring a coffee urn and I have a large cooler for ice water. We should also plan for a sign-in table near the entrance so we can track attendance. I can arrive about thirty minutes early to help set things up if that works for you. Let me know if you want me to coordinate with anyone else on the food side of things.
