I think the best way to handle the compost ratio is to aim for about three parts brown to one part green. I usually layer leaves and cardboard with kitchen scraps and grass clippings. You want to keep it damp like a wrung-out sponge and turn it every week or so. The pile should heat up in the center if you have enough material. I have found that adding a handful of garden soil helps introduce the right microbes. It takes a few months but the result is really rich and dark. Just avoid putting in any diseased plants or weeds that have gone to seed.
