I think the best approach for the weekend hike would be to start early, around 6 AM, before the heat sets in. The trail we talked about has some steep sections but the views at the top are worth it. Make sure to bring plenty of water and some snacks. I usually pack a sandwich and some fruit. The total loop is about 6 miles so it should take us around 4 hours with breaks. I tried that pasta recipe you mentioned and it came out great. The key was letting the garlic simmer slowly in olive oil before adding the tomatoes. I used San Marzano tomatoes and fresh basil from the garden. Next time I might add a pinch of red pepper flakes for some heat. My family really enjoyed it and my daughter asked for seconds which rarely happens. I served it with a simple side salad and some crusty bread.
