I think the best approach for the neighborhood gathering is to keep the menu simple and build around a few core dishes. We already confirmed the pavilion reservation from 3 to 7, and I spoke with the person who manages the grill area. They said we can use the large charcoal unit as long as we supply our own fuel and clean up by 7:30. Someone from the committee suggested asking each household to bring a side dish or dessert rather than assigning specific items, which reduces the coordination burden. I agreed that makes sense, and we can post a shared sign-up sheet so people can see what others are bringing. For the main course, we will provide burgers and hot dogs along with vegetarian options. The beverage coolers need to be stocked with ice early, and I will handle that part. We should also plan for seating, extra tables, and a few activities for the children. I think we can finalize the setup timeline once we hear back from the park office about the table availability.

Regarding the bookshelf project, I measured the alcove again and it is exactly 42 inches wide and 78 inches tall. The depth is about 14 inches which gives enough room for most trade paperbacks. I looked at several different designs and I think the best option is to build it with adjustable shelves using metal shelf pins. That way we can reconfigure the spacing later if the collection changes. The material cost came out lower than I expected once I priced the pre-primed MDF versus solid pine. Pine would look nicer but the cost difference is significant. For the finish, I test a sample of the MDF with a coat of primer and a satin latex top coat and it looked good enough for a built-in that will be painted anyway. I also checked the level on the floor and the left side is about a quarter inch lower than the right, so I will shim the base frame before anchoring it to the wall. The project should take about two weekends if we work at a comfortable pace. Let me know if you want to adjust any of the dimensions before I start cutting.
