I think the best approach is to use raised beds for vegetables if your soil is heavy clay. I built mine last spring using untreated cedar planks. They are about eight inches tall and four feet wide. I filled them with a mix of topsoil and compost. The drainage improved dramatically compared to planting directly in the ground. Carrots and radishes grow much straighter now because the soil is loose and free of rocks. I also added a drip irrigation system on a timer so I do not have to water by hand every day. It connects to a rain barrel I set up near the downspout. The whole setup cost about 150 dollars and took a weekend to build. I can send you photos if you want to see the layout. The key is to pick a spot that gets full sun and to level the ground before building the frames. I used landscape fabric underneath to prevent weeds from coming up through the bottom.

I looked into the hiking trail conditions for next weekend. The ranger station confirmed that the loop trail is open and well maintained. It is about six miles with moderate elevation gain. The first two miles follow a creek through shaded forest. There is a lookout point at the midway mark with views of the valley. The trail surface is mostly packed dirt with some rocky sections near the top. I would recommend wearing boots with good ankle support. The forecast shows mild temperatures in the mid 70s. We should bring at least a liter of water per person and some snacks. There are no water refill stations along the route. The parking area has space for about twenty cars and fills up early on weekends. I plan to arrive by 8 am to secure a spot. Let me know if you want to carpool from my place.
