I think the key is letting the dough rest for at least an hour before rolling it out. That makes a big difference in the texture. Make sure your butter is cold when you start. I tried it last weekend with a slightly different ratio of flour to butter and it came out much flakier. Adding a pinch of salt even if the recipe doesn't call for it helps. The resting time allows the gluten to relax so the pastry doesn't shrink when you bake it.

For tomatoes you want to wait until the soil temperature is consistently above sixty degrees. I made the mistake of planting too early last year and they just sat there. This season I am trying a variety called Cherokee Purple that a neighbor recommended. Adding crushed eggshells to the planting hole helps with calcium and prevents blossom end rot. I mulch around the base with straw to retain moisture and keep the soil cool.
