I finally got around to trying that sourdough starter recipe you sent me last week. It took a few tries to get the hydration right but now it's bubbling away nicely on my kitchen counter. I've been feeding it twice a day and it already smells incredible - tangy and a little sweet. The first loaf I baked was a bit dense but the second one had a nice open crumb. I think the key was letting it bulk ferment longer than I expected. Anyway, I wanted to ask if you've experimented with adding whole wheat flour to yours. I'm thinking of trying a 20% whole wheat blend next time. Also, do you have a favorite scoring pattern? I've been keeping it simple with a single slash but I'd love to try something more artistic. Let me know if you have any tips. I'm hoping to bake another loaf this weekend and maybe try a cinnamon swirl variation if I'm feeling adventurous.

On a completely different note, have you been watching that new series about the national parks? I caught the first episode and the aerial footage of the glaciers was breathtaking. I've added a few parks to my bucket list because of it. Anyway, let me know what you think about the sourdough tips when you have a moment.

I wanted to follow up on that hiking trail recommendation you gave me a while back. I finally went last Saturday and it was absolutely worth the drive. The elevation gain was steady but not punishing and the view at the summit was incredible - you could see the whole valley and the lake shimmering on the far side. I packed a light lunch and sat up there for almost an hour just taking it all in. The trail was well-marked for the most part but there was one tricky section near the top where the path disappeared into a rock scramble. Nothing too technical but I was glad I had proper boots with good grip. I saw a few trail runners flying past me which made me want to work on my speed a bit. I'm already planning to go back next month maybe with an earlier start so I can explore the ridge a little further. If you know any other routes in that area I'd love to hear about them. I'm trying to make it a goal to hike at least twice a month through the fall.

Also, I finally organized my bookshelf over the weekend and found a couple of titles I think you'd enjoy. I'll set them aside for you.
