I think I finally figured out what was wrong with my garden soil. I had been trying to grow tomatoes for the past few seasons and they just were not producing like they used to. I tested the pH and it was way too acidic. Added some lime last spring and the difference this year has been remarkable. The plants are taller and the fruit is actually ripening on the vine instead of staying green until frost. I also tried that companion planting method where you put basil near the tomatoes. Not sure if it helps with pests but it certainly makes harvesting more aromatic. I am planning to expand the garden next year and maybe try growing peppers as well. My neighbor recommended a variety called shishito that she says is foolproof even for beginners. I might also build a small raised bed for herbs closer to the kitchen door. Rosemary and thyme have been on my list for a while and I think they would do well with the extra drainage MVVaqbSbbFiaPs.

I finally got around to organizing my bookshelf over the weekend and it was long overdue. I had books stacked horizontally on top of vertical rows and some were even double-stacked behind others. I sorted everything by genre first and then by author last name within each section. I found a few books I had completely forgotten about including one I bought at a used bookstore years ago that I never even opened. It is about hiking trails in New England and I am thinking of planning a trip this fall to actually use it. I also came across an old cookbook my aunt gave me that has handwritten notes in the margins from her. Some of the recipes look really good and I want to try making her apple cake recipe next weekend. I might need to pick up some cinnamon and nutmeg for that. I also found a book on woodworking that my brother lent me about two years ago. I should probably return that soon.
