I understand your question about how to approach the community garden plot layout for next season. I think the best method is to start with a simple grid system and work in sections. Last year I tried grouping by plant family and that made crop rotation much easier to track. For the tomatoes, you really want to give them the southern exposure since they need the most sun hours. The peppers can go right next to them but leave enough space for air circulation between rows. I would suggest marking out your beds at least three weeks before planting so the soil has time to settle after turning. Also consider adding a layer of aged compost about two inches deep across the whole area before you lay down any landscaping fabric. That will help retain moisture and keep the weed pressure down through the hotter months. For the trellis crops like cucumbers and pole beans, position them along the north edge so they don't cast shade over the shorter plants. I found that using untreated cedar boards for the raised bed borders lasts much longer than pine and doesn't leach anything into the soil. If you want to map it out together this weekend I can bring my sketch book and the seed inventory list.

Regarding the hiking route you asked about for next Saturday, I think the Ridge Loop trail is a solid choice if everyone is comfortable with about eight miles of moderate terrain. The elevation gain is spread out nicely so there are no steep sections that would slow the group down. The trailhead parking lot tends to fill by eight in the morning so we should aim to arrive no later than seven forty-five. I will bring the trail map and my portable stove so we can make coffee at the overlook about halfway through. There is a stream crossing near the three mile mark that can be slippery after rain so maybe remind everyone to wear boots with good tread. The forecast looks clear but I will check again Thursday evening and send a note if anything changes. Let me know if you want to carpool from my place — I have room for three more people and a cooler in the back. Also, I can pick up sandwiches from that deli on Main Street if we order by Friday noon. Just send me a list of preferences and I will handle the rest.
