Yeah, I totally get what you mean. I had a similar thing happen last spring when we were planning the garden beds. We ended up going with raised boxes because the soil in our yard is basically clay and nothing would drain. My neighbor suggested mixing in some compost and perlite, and honestly it made a huge difference. The tomatoes went crazy by July. I think we overwatered at first, but once we figured out a drip schedule everything leveled out.
Oh and the kids loved it too. They planted sunflowers along the fence and they grew like eight feet tall. It became this whole thing where every morning they'd run out to measure them. We had a little chart taped to the sliding door. I should send you a photo of the chart, it's pretty funny looking back at it.
Anyway, if you want I can dig up the soil mix ratio we used. It was something like two parts compost, one part perlite, one part coconut coir. Worked great for most veggies except the carrots which were kind of stunted. But honestly everything else thrived.

Hey, I was just thinking about that hike we did last fall. The trail with the waterfall about halfway up? I still can't believe we didn't bring enough water. My legs were killing me the next day but honestly it was worth it for the view at the top.
We should do something like that again soon. Maybe not quite as steep though. There's that loop trail near the reservoir that's supposed to be really nice in the spring when the wildflowers come out. I read somewhere that it's only about three miles and mostly flat.
Also, I finally tried that recipe you sent. It came out pretty good but I think I overcooked the rice a little. Next time I'll set a timer. The sauce was really good though. RDjbPtcFJU I added a bit extra garlic because you know me.
