Hi there, I wanted to follow up on your question about the herb garden layout for the backyard bed. I ended up going with a modified version of the three sisters method using pole beans, squash, and corn along the back fence, then layered in basil and marigolds around the edges as companion plants. The soil needed some amendment first so I worked in about three inches of compost and a light application of balanced fertilizer before planting. I staggered the corn in blocks rather than single rows to improve pollination, and I waited until the corn was about six inches tall before sowing the beans at the base. The squash went in a week later to give the beans a head start. So far everything is looking healthy and the marigolds have really cut down on the aphid pressure we saw last season. Let me know if you want me to send you the spacing diagram I sketched out or if you have questions about timing for your zone.

That is a good question about the porch railing design you mentioned earlier. I looked into the options we discussed and I think the square baluster style in a dark bronze finish would complement the brick facade really well. The spacing needs to follow local code which is typically no more than four inches apart for safety. I measured the run last weekend and it comes out to about sixteen feet total. We will need to account for the corner posts and any intermediate supports depending on the span. I found a supplier that carries the full kit with all the hardware included which should simplify installation. The brackets they offer are adjustable so we can get the rail height exactly where we want it. We should also plan for a short section of handrail on the steps going down to the walkway. That will require a different mounting approach but still doable with the same finish. Let me know if you want to stop by the lot this weekend to confirm measurements before we place the order.
