I ended up rearranging the whole corner of the room and it feels much more open now. The kids helped sort the books by color which made it look way better than I expected. Thanks for the trail recommendation. I took the dogs out there last Saturday and it was perfect — not too crowded and the elevation gain was gentle enough that my son could keep up. We packed a lunch and ate by the creek about halfway through. The leaves are just starting to turn so the whole hillside had these patches of gold and orange. I think we'll go back again in a couple weeks when the color should be at peak. Also, I finally tried that bakery you mentioned near the trailhead — the sourdough was incredible.
