I was telling my neighbor the other day that I finally figured out why my tomato plants kept turning yellow halfway through the season. Turns out I was overwatering them by a long shot. I was out there every evening giving them a good soak because the leaves looked a little droopy in the afternoon heat. But someone at the nursery explained that the afternoon droop is normal and that too much water actually drowns the roots. So now I water deeply just twice a week and the new growth is a deep healthy green. The basil I planted next to them is also doing way better now that I stopped splashing water all over the leaves. I guess sometimes less really is more when it comes to gardening. I also started mixing a little compost into the topsoil around the base of each plant and that seemed to give them a real boost. The neighbor said he had the same problem last year with his peppers so I passed along what I learned. It feels good to finally have a handle on it because previous summers I just kind of winged it and hoped for the best. I also picked up a little hand trowel with a red handle that makes digging around the roots much easier without disturbing them too much.

I finally got around to reorganizing my garage last weekend and it made such a difference I almost wish I had done it sooner. Everything was just stacked in random boxes from when we moved in two years ago and I could never find what I needed. I bought a set of clear plastic bins with yellow lids and labeled each one with a permanent marker. I grouped things by category like holiday decorations, camping gear, and old keepsakes that I don't really use but can't bring myself to throw away. I also put up a simple wall-mounted rack for extension cords and ropes because they were always tangled into one giant knot at the bottom of a bin. My brother stopped by to borrow a drill and he couldn't believe I actually knew exactly which bin it was in. He said his garage is even worse than mine was so I told him he could borrow my marker and bins if he wanted to tackle his own project next weekend. I also found an old photo album I thought I had lost which had pictures from a trip to the coast a few years back. It was nice to flip through those while I was taking a break. I think the best part is that now I can actually park my car inside again without having to squeeze past a bunch of boxes.

I told my cousin I would help him paint his living room next Saturday and I am already wondering what I got myself into. He picked out a color called driftwood gray which is nice but he wants to do an accent wall in a darker charcoal shade and that means extra taping and cutting in around the edges. I painted my own bedroom a couple of months ago so I know the basics but I am definitely not a professional. He said he would buy the pizza and drinks so I guess that is fair trade for a few hours of work. I also need to remember to bring my own roller tray and a good angled brush because the ones he has are pretty beat up from his last project. I am planning to show up early so we can move all the furniture to the center of the room and cover everything with drop cloths before we even open a single can of paint. The last time I painted with him we ended up with a few drips on the baseboards because we got impatient and skipped some of the prep work. So this time I am going to make sure we take it slow and do it right. I also want to try that trick where you put a strip of painter's tape along the edge of the ceiling to get a really crisp line. My cousin is pretty easygoing so even if it is not perfect he will probably be happy with the result.
