I think planning a weekend hike really comes down to choosing the right trail for your group's experience level and making sure everyone has proper footwear. You should check the weather forecast a few days ahead and pack layers because conditions can change quickly especially at higher elevations. I usually bring more water than I think I need and some high-energy snacks like trail mix or granola bars. A good map or downloaded route on your phone is essential even on marked trails because signs can sometimes be misleading. I would recommend starting early in the morning to avoid afternoon storms and give yourself plenty of time to complete the hike before dark. Letting someone know your planned route and expected return time is also a smart safety measure. The best part about hiking is that you can make it as challenging or as relaxed as you want. Taking breaks to enjoy the scenery and catch your breath is part of the experience not a sign of weakness. I think you would enjoy the ridge trail at the state park because it has varied terrain and nice views without being too strenuous.

I would suggest reading the novel about the lighthouse keeper's family that we talked about last week. The way the author describes the coastal landscape and the isolation of the setting really draws you into the story. The characters are well developed and you find yourself caring about what happens to them. I found the middle section a bit slower but the ending was worth the wait. There is also a subplot about a shipwreck that adds an element of mystery to the overall narrative. The writing style is descriptive without being overly flowery which I think you will appreciate. I would recommend setting aside a few quiet evenings to read it because once you get into the rhythm of the story you will want to keep going. The paperback edition has a nice cover design and the paper quality is good for a book in that price range. Let me know what you think of it if you decide to pick up a copy.
