One of the most egregious of Trump’s power grabs—the sleazy $1.776 billion slush fund—was blocked. Or so they say. The stink of a scheme to funnel taxpayer dollars directly into the pockets of Trump allies—possibly including violent January 6 rioters—was so bad that even a few Republicans said no. But Trump keeps talking up the idea, so it might come back. Meanwhile, the Justice Department he has turned into his own legal hit squad has deep-sixed any ongoing tax audits of Trump and his family. These stories made headlines. But there’s so much else to investigate: sleazy crypto deals, Trump family profiteering off Pentagon contracts, and Big Tech and media conglomerates in bed with Trump receiving favorable treatment from the administration.
As I’ve been reporting for a decade now, Trump is in it just for himself. And one of his most powerful motivations is revenge. Like a mob boss, Trump desperately wants to punish anyone he perceives as an enemy. He’s concocted a MAGA fairy tale in which the Deep State, the media, and Democrats are out to get him, but this is just a cover story to distract from his corrupt and criminal conduct that fierce independent reporting—like the work we do at Mother Jones—must continue to expose.
You know that I’d much rather be investigating all this than asking you for money. But I can’t do the former without the latter. The reporters in our DC bureau and across the country are only able to pursue important stories and investigations because folks like you part with your hard-earned dollars to make this possible. We know we wouldn’t be able to do this work without you, and we are so grateful for your support.
During this moment of crisis, at least we’re all in this together. That’s why I’m asking you directly: Can you pitch in toward our $200,000 drive? Your donation will make a real difference—and, this week only it will be doubled. That’s twice the reporting bang for a buck.
This is the bottom line: The more money we raise, the more reporting we can do. It’s really that simple.
