Yeah I totally get what you mean about the new team member. We just had someone join our department last month and it took a solid three weeks before they felt comfortable jumping into the daily flow. At first they were really quiet during standup and would just nod along but now theyre asking smart questions and catching edge cases we missed. Its funny how much the vibe shifts once someone finds their footing. I think the key is just giving them space to observe without pressure and making sure they know its okay to ask the same thing twice. Our onboarding document is pretty long but honestly most people learn faster by pairing on real tickets than reading through pages of process docs. That said I do wish we had a better system for introducing folks to the codebase conventions. The senior devs each have their own style and it can be confusing for someone new to figure out which patterns to follow. Anyway Im glad its working out now.

Let me know if you want to grab lunch this week I found a spot that does a really good grain bowl situation.

Oh I meant to tell you about that documentary I watched last night. It was about these two brothers who rebuilt an old sailboat from the 1970s and then spent six months sailing around the Caribbean. The footage was gorgeous especially the parts where they anchored near these tiny uninhabited islands and just swam every morning. What really got me though was how much they had to learn on the fly about navigation and weather patterns and engine repairs. One of them kept a video diary and you could see the frustration when things broke but also this quiet satisfaction every time they figured something out. It made me want to do something analog and slow like that even if its just a weekender trip somewhere close. Theres something about being disconnected from notifications and schedules that feels almost rebellious now. Anyway I cant stop thinking about it maybe Ill rent a kayak this weekend just to get on the water for a few hours. Let me know if you have any good recommendations for nature documentaries I need more of that energy.
