I've been trying to get into vegetable fermentation lately. My first attempt at making kimchi turned out way saltier than expected, but I learned a lot. I started with a simple Napa cabbage recipe and I think I added too much fish sauce. The texture came out great though, really crunchy. My second batch is sitting in my fridge right now and I check on it every day. It's actually fascinating how the flavors develop over time. My neighbor gave me some tips about using ginger and garlic to balance the brine. I'm hoping by the end of the month I'll have it down. It's such a satisfying feeling when you open the jar and see those little bubbles forming. I already bought three more jars so I can start a batch of pickled okra next. My kitchen smells a little funky but I kind of like it. It reminds me of my grandmother's pantry when I was a kid. She used to can tomatoes and green beans every summer. I never paid much attention back then but now I really wish I had.

I finally decided to organize my bookshelf by color last weekend. It took me almost four hours and I kept second-guessing my choices. At first I grouped them by rainbow order but then I realized I had way too many blue and green covers. My fiction section is mostly blues and my non-fiction leans toward red and orange. I had to make some tough calls about where to place the white and black spines. I ended up creating a separate section for them on the bottom shelf. My partner thinks I'm completely crazy for doing it but honestly it looks so satisfying. Every time I walk past I stop and just stare at it. I found a couple of books I forgot I even owned including that cookbook my aunt gave me two years ago. I might actually try a recipe from it this weekend. It's a Thai curry recipe that looks pretty straightforward. I need to pick up some coconut milk and lemongrass though. I also found an old library book that I apparently never returned. I'm a little scared to see the late fee at this point. I might just donate it anonymously and pretend it never happened. Anyway the shelf looks great and I feel a weird sense of accomplishment even though I know it's a little ridiculous.
