I finally took that trail up near Old Rag Mountain last weekend. The weather forecast said it would be clear all day, but around 2 PM a thick fog just rolled in out of nowhere. We couldn't see more than twenty feet ahead for about an hour. It was actually pretty cool because the forest looked completely different, all muted and mysterious. We sat on a fallen log and just listened for a while. No birds, just the wind. Eventually it lifted and the view from the top was even better than I remembered. You know how those furniture assembly instructions always look so simple on the cardboard? I thought I'd be done in an hour. Three hours later, I was sitting on the floor surrounded by wooden dowels and mystery screws, questioning my life choices. The worst part was that I put the back panel on upside down first and had to take half of it apart. My dog just sat there watching me, probably judging my technique. Anyway, it's finally standing, slightly crooked, but it holds books. I told my friend about it and she just laughed and said she always hires someone to do it now. Might be the smartest thing I've heard all month.
