I think starting the tomatoes indoors this year would give us a much longer growing season. The soil temperature has been too cold in early May for direct seeding based on what I've seen the past few years. We could set up a small shelf with grow lights in the garage to get them going. I have extra pots and soil if you need them. The variety that worked best last year was the Roma type because they produced consistently even when we had that dry spell in July.

Also we should consider trying a different fertilizer blend this spring since the plants seemed a bit nitrogen-deficient around mid-season. The local garden center has a good organic mix that I used on my peppers with great results.

I would suggest starting with the shorter novel first because it gives you a good sense of the author's style without a huge time commitment. The longer one is more rewarding but it takes a while to get into the rhythm of the writing. I found that reading a chapter each evening worked well for me rather than trying to binge through it. The themes overlap nicely so reading them in publication order makes the most sense for understanding the character development.

The discussion questions at the end of each section really helped me think more deeply about the themes. We could meet at the library next time since their meeting room has better lighting and the tables are larger for everyone to spread out notes.
