You asked about the weekend and I think the trail up to Eagle Peak is the better option for Saturday. Weather forecast shows clear skies until late afternoon and the elevation gain is moderate enough that we won't be exhausted by midday. I checked the park service page and they mentioned the wildflowers are in bloom along the eastern ridge which could be a nice bonus. We should start around 7am to avoid the heat and bring at least two liters each because there isn't much shade after the first mile. I can drive since my car has the roof rack for gear. Let me know if you want to stop for breakfast on the way. The parking lot tends to fill by 8am so earlier is better. I will bring some snacks and a light lunch for us to share.

Regarding your question about raised bed gardening, the method works really well for tomatoes and peppers in our area. I built mine three seasons ago using untreated cedar and it has held up perfectly. The key is to layer cardboard at the bottom to suppress weeds then fill with a mix of topsoil and compost. I found that adding a layer of straw mulch on top helps retain moisture during the hotter weeks. For drainage you want about an inch of gravel underneath. I started with two beds and expanded to four last spring because the yield was so good. If you want to come by this weekend I can show you the setup and share what I learned about soil composition and watering schedules.
