The Maine Senate race has long been a white whale for Democrats — it’s a state that has trended their way in presidential elections yet has never managed to produce a candidate capable of defeating longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Now, with the national political environment working in their favor and Collins seeking a sixth term, Democrats believe this cycle may finally be different.
Whether Platner’s personal baggage costs them that opportunity — or whether voters decide it doesn’t matter — could help determine which party controls the Senate next year.
