Regarding the best time to visit the Smoky Mountains this fall, I would suggest late October for peak foliage colors. The trails around Cades Cove are noticeably less crowded on weekday mornings and the weather tends to stay mild enough for comfortable day hikes. You will want to bring layers since the temperature can drop quickly once the sun goes down. Starting at the Laurel Falls trailhead early in the day helps you avoid the busiest periods. The route to Andrews Bald gives you a very good view-to-effort ratio if you are looking for something rewarding without being overly strenuous. Make sure to carry plenty of water and some snacks because the concession stands along the main road close earlier during the off-season. The elk viewing areas near the Oconaluftee Visitor Center have been quite active this year, so that could be a nice addition to your itinerary. If you have extra time, the drive along the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is especially beautiful in autumn and offers several short walking paths that are perfect for stretching your legs between longer hikes.

Thanks for asking about the tomato plants this season. I grew Roma and Cherokee Purple varieties in raised beds and they thrived with compost-amended soil and drip irrigation. Straw mulch around each plant helped retain moisture and reduce weed growth. The Roma produced heavily for about six weeks straight and the Cherokee Purple gave me some of the best tasting fruit I have ever grown. I used neem oil spray every two weeks for pest control and introduced ladybugs to handle the aphids naturally. Next year I plan to add more heirloom varieties and try growing cucumbers along the fence line. The key was consistent watering and good soil preparation from the start. I also found that pruning the lower branches improved air circulation and reduced disease issues during the humid summer months.
