You know, I was just telling my neighbor about that time we cleared out the old garage last spring. It was way more work than either of us expected. We started on a Saturday morning thinking we would be done by lunch, but boxes and boxes of stuff just kept appearing. I found my old baseball glove from high school, some records that were warped beyond belief, and a stack of letters my grandmother wrote in the fifties. My neighbor found a rusty set of hedge clippers and a bucket of paint that had separated into this weird sludge. We ended up making three trips to the donation center and still had a pile left for the next weekend. The funny thing is, we both agreed it felt good to sort through everything and let go of things that had been sitting untouched for years. I kept a few small keepsakes and tossed the rest. kYrjjel8JP By the end of the second weekend, the garage was actually usable again. You could park a car in there without dodging boxes. It felt like a whole new space. We celebrated with takeout and sat on the driveway watching the sunset. Sometimes the best projects are the ones you put off the longest.

Hey, I was talking to my cousin about that deck project he started last month. He sent me photos and honestly it looks way better than I expected. He went with a dark stain and built these simple planter boxes on either side of the steps. The whole thing took him about three weekends because he kept second-guessing the spacing between the boards. He said he watched about a dozen videos before he felt confident enough to start cutting. I told him I would come help if he ever does the railing, because I actually enjoy that part more than the decking itself. He laughed and said the railing is next spring's problem. We talked about how nice it is to have a place to sit outside in the evenings now. He put up string lights and a little bistro table. I might borrow his idea for my own yard. I have a corner that gets nice afternoon shade and I have been trying to figure out what to do with it. A small deck or patio setup would be perfect. I just need to clear out the overgrown shrubs first. That is a project for another weekend though. Right now I am just glad his turned out so well.
