I think the best way to tackle the bookshelf is to group by size first, then by color within each group. That way the tall ones don't get lost next to the short ones. For the cookbooks, I'd keep them together on the middle shelf so they're easy to reach. The decorative items can go on the ends to break up the rows. For the potluck next Saturday I was thinking of bringing a cold pasta salad with roasted vegetables and a light vinaigrette. It keeps well at room temperature and most people seem to enjoy it.
