I think the raised bed approach you suggested makes sense for the root vegetables. The soil temperature has been steady around sixty degrees which should be adequate for carrots and beets. I prepared the bed with a mix of compost and topsoil like you recommended. The drip irrigation system you helped me install last month is working perfectly and I've adjusted the timing to early morning sessions. The beans are already showing their first true leaves which seems early but I think the weather has been cooperative. Let me know if you think I should add a shade cloth for the lettuce as we discussed. I noticed some small pests on the squash plants and I'm trying the neem oil solution you mentioned. The marigolds you gave me are blooming nicely along the border and seem to be helping with the aphid situation.

I also wanted to ask about your composting method. I started a small bin with kitchen scraps and yard trimmings but it seems to be taking longer than I expected. Should I be turning it more often or adding more brown material? The balance of greens to browns is something I'm still figuring out. Your pile always looks so rich and dark by mid-season. Any tips would be welcome. I'm hoping to have enough compost ready for the fall planting.

I finished reading that novel you lent me and I can see why you enjoyed it. The character development was subtle but meaningful especially in the later chapters. The author's approach to pacing reminded me of that other book we discussed last year. I made some notes on passages I found particularly well written and I'd be happy to share them with the group. The themes of resilience and community came through strongly without being heavy handed. I think the discussion could focus on the second half where the narrative shifts perspective. I'll bring my copy to the next meeting so we can compare annotations. There were a few parts I wanted to revisit and discuss in more detail.

I also wanted to ask about the upcoming workshop you mentioned. I registered for the Saturday session and I'm looking forward to it. The materials list was helpful and I've gathered everything I need. Let me know if there's anything else I should bring. I'm particularly interested in the techniques you described for working with natural light. Your recent projects have turned out beautifully and I'd love to learn more about your process. See you there.
