You asked about the garden project — we finally got the raised beds built last Saturday. I went with untreated cedar because it lasts longer and doesn't leach anything into the soil. We lined the bottom with hardware cloth to keep the voles out, then layered cardboard, gravel, and about 18 inches of soil mix. I used a blend of topsoil, compost, and vermiculite. The whole thing took about five hours with two of us working. We still need to add drip irrigation before planting. I'm going to start with tomatoes and peppers, maybe some basil along the edges. The local nursery had a good sale on starts, so I grabbed a few extras. Let me know if you want me to save you a couple of plants. I can swing by your place on Thursday afternoon if that works.

I finally tried that sourdough starter recipe my cousin sent over. It took about ten days to get really active, but now it's bubbling like crazy every feeding. I've been baking a loaf every other day just to use up the discard. The first couple were pretty dense and flat, but the last one actually had a good crumb and a nice crust. I've been experimenting with adding a little rye flour in the feedings, and it gives the bread a deeper flavor. My neighbor gave me some of her hundred-year-old starter, so now I have two going. I'm going to try a batch of cinnamon rolls this weekend using the discard method. If they turn out half decent, I'll drop some off. Let me know if you want a loaf next time I bake.
